Make Dinosaur Eggs

You probably have dyed eggs as an activity for the Easter Bunny during the Spring time but have you ever dyed cracked eggs? Well this twist will create eggs that look like dinosaur or dragon eggs and the best part is you can eat them!

DIFFICULTY

  • Easy

MATERIALS

  • Raw eggs in a shell

  • Water

  • Cups

  • Food Coloring

  • Saucepan

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Have an adult boil some eggs. Have the kids observe the boiling process of the water.

  2. Once boiled allow them to sit for at least 15 minutes in cold water.

  3. Add water to each empty cup and a few food coloring drops until you get the color you desire. Add enough water so it covers an egg.

  4. Lightly tap each eggs on a hard surface. This step will give them the cool effect.

  5. Add the eggs to the water with food coloring and let them sit there for at least 3 hours.

  6. After the eggs sit in the colored water for hours dry them up and *gently* remove the shells.

  7. Tada! Dinosaur or Dragon looking eggs!

HOWs & WHYs & SCIENCE

The cracks on the eggshells allowed the colored water to get into the egg and that made the cool dinosaur effect. The Science part of the experiment is in the boiling point of water which its needed to boil the eggs. Water boils at 212°F or 100°C in a sea level. It might change depending on altitude. If you observed the eggs while they were boiling maybe you also noticed some bubbles in the saucepan. Those are air bubbles made of water vapor which is just water that has turned to the gas phase. Science is everywhere!
